Bryan Hopster—Teaching Staff

The most dangerous phrase in the English language is ‘we have always done it this way’.”

– Grace Hopper

Bryan Hopster (he/him) is the newest addition to the PSCS collaborative staff. Originally from Vancouver, WA, Bryan moved to the Seattle area to attend the University of Washington where he received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology—with an emphasis in animal behavior. Prior to choosing a career in education, Bryan worked as an animal trainer and researcher; once leading a research project for the Woodland Park Zoo to explore methods of how different types of enrichment can be used for grizzly bears in captivity to produce more wild-like behaviors. After college he worked as a bird keeper/trainer in Orlando, Florida where he helped with the husbandry and training of birds to perform naturalistic behaviors for Disney World’s Animal Kingdom.

After receiving his teaching certification from City University, Bryan spent the last 4 years as a math teacher in the Mercer Island School District, where he created multiple, differentiated, pathways based on student needs—in order to help young people excel and engage no matter their skill level. Besides math he has also taught science, various electives, and oversaw the Chess and Math Clubs.

“What drew me to PSCS was the unanimous goal the staff has at making this a place that makes sure everyone’s voices are heard and lets students take ownership of their own learning. It’s a dedicated group of people who give their all every day, refusing to settle for complacency.”

Bryan lives in West Seattle with his 12 year old cat, Jim.
